How fast is my OpenVPN service?

Two words

Blazing Fast

Today I had an hour to check it out. I started the client and went over to TPB. I started a random number of downloads (of files with high numbers of seeders. Within one hour my 256 Gb SSD was full!

While I was watching I observed download speeds between 1 and 10 MB/s.

Here’s a short video:

Please note that I’m speaking about 1 to 5 MB/second. Later on his climbed to 10 MB/second.

My own Internet speed (not that of the VPN Server, which has a Tb connection to the cloud) is 10 Mbps, which sounds like a lot but since the speeds being advertised by the ISP are MegaBITS per second and uTorrent shows megaBYTES per second. The quick and dirty conversion calculation is to divide by 10, so 10 megaBITS per second works out to 1 megaBYTES per second under perfect conditions. How can I achieve 10 MB/second (100 Mbps)?

The answer is that with many seeders I’m dowloading multiple times my max.

OpenVPN Clients setup

Setting up your OpenVPN clients

My OpenVPN server supports  the following clients:

  • PC (With Microsoft Windows or any Linux).
  • Apple Mac (With MacOS X).
  •  iPhone or iPad  (IOS 8 or higher).
  • Android devices (Currently everything is supported). You must have the Android OS installed.

Installation of the client Software

Note: Connecting to a VPN will change your IP address. To be able to check this properly you should first find your current IP address and make a note of it. To find your IP address point your browser to http://www.whatismyip.com/

Microsoft Windows

For Windows, the OpenVPN client is called OpenVPN GUI. You can download it from https://openvpn.net/.

After you installed it you can import your ms-windows.opvn file and simply click ‘connect’. After 10 to 20 seconds you should see a message that you are connected successfully.

Verily that your IP address has changed.

Again check your IP address and verify it has been changed. Your new IP address should be 149.210.197.2. From here you are safe. You can connect to each site you want. Your anonymity is guaranteed since your IP address is completely different! You may also use blocked websites or tunnel trough proxy servers. Remember: You are anonymous so impossible for others to trace!

Apple Mac

To connect your Mac to my OpenVPN you need to download tunnelblick from https://tunnelblick.net/. It’s just a small download. After downloading, open the .DMG and install the software as you are used to on your Mac.

After you installed it you can import your Mac.opvn file and simply click ‘connect’. After 10 to 20 seconds you should see a message that you are connected successfully. You will also see the progress in a small window in the right top of your screen. As soon as the messages change color from red, yellow and finally green you are connected.

Again verify your IP-Address as described above.

Mobile devices

For Tablets, Smartphones, iPad, iPhone and Android devices the setup procedures are all the same.

  1. Go to the App-Store (Apple) or the Google play store (Android).
  2. Search for OpenVPN and pick the OpenVPN Connect App.
  3. After it’s installed, import your ovpn*

On IOS, connect your device with a Mac or PC running iTunes and transfer the ovpn using iTunes directly into the device. On Android go to ovpn profile and the file you have downloaded will automatically appeard on the screen and just click the file after you see the check in the right side click Import on the above side.

The interface is exactly the same across all mobile devices, weather it’s IOS or Android. Note that the image here has two configurations. (Actually it has 2 different ovpn files imported). This could be useful if you have two different providers. In practice you will get only one.

*The .ovpn file contains the full configuration as well as encryption keys to connect to the OpenVPN service. I will send you this when you subscribe.

Free stuff – the best resources

Introduction

We all love free stuff. I myself don’t like to pay for Software. This is the reason why I’m interested in Open Source.

But what to do if a good Open Source alternative isn’t available? For example if you need to edit a Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote or Access file?

We have 3 options I will summarize them in my order of preference:

  1. Search YouTube for the title and add ‘free’ or ‘for free‘. Many times I found a good video with an explanation on how to get the (soft)warez for free.
  2. Search thepiratebay.org and download what I need. Unfortunately if you live in the Netherlands, this is  not available because the Brein foundation together with Microsoft bought a judge who was willing to force the two biggest ISP’s Ziggo and Xs4All to block access to this site. (Yes! I also thought we were a civilized country). Since I’m the proud owner of a real Cloud Server I decided to do something about this. Together with my companion we installed the Open Source OpenVPN. It was a big job to get everything to work correctly but after a couple of days (and nights) it’s finally working. Check out the link and watch the video! TPB is back again and faster than ever! I already downloaded gigabytes!
The block

I noticed the block works at the DNS level, which implies that the Ziggo DNS intercepts lookup requests.

Other alternatives
  • Proxies -Some sites offer proxy servers to work around blocks of thepiratebay.org like TPBPL. Try them all and you’ll find out none of them work. The Ziggo block works at the level of the Ziggo DNS and proxys use the Ziggo DNS for lookups.
  • Tor browser – In fact this should work. The Tor (Onion Router) works similar to VPN. It hides your IP address and securely encrypts all data. Give it a try. It works! Unfortully against a big trade-off (performance). I tried to download some titles but soon gave up when opening a single link took over 10 minutes, which isn’t acceptable.
  • Port redirection – Effectively this is the same as a SOCKS proxy. I tried it and it doesn’t work since it uses the Ziggo DNS servers, which redirect all requists to a Ziggo page.
  • Why the VPN works – OpenVPN uses it’s own DNS Servers and also encrypts the requests to its own DNS servers from end-to-end so even Ziggo cannot see what happens. The result is clean and fast access to TPB as you were used before the block,

VPN Service

Introduction

The Pirate Bay
The Pirate Bay

Dit artikel is beschikbaar in nederlands. Are you (like me) a Lover of Warez? And did you find out (to your disappointment) that the Piratebay has been blocked for some time?  I can help you with a fast, reliable and secure VPN. Not just like one of the many Piratebay proxies which are available in plenty but a real end-to-end Virtual Private Network.

How fast is this?

The only limting factor is your Internet connection. Your connection with the Piratebay is unlimited! (Gigabytes per second). In practice you won’t notice any difference from the Download speed which you were used to.

Demo:

How secure is it?

100 % Secure. Actually large companies share data over multiple branches over the world with VPN’s so there is absolutely no risk! You can be sure that nobody (even me) can see what you are doing or downloading!

How does it work?

It uses the Open Source OpenVpn software to tunnel your traffic from my LAN to your LAN (Or Computer),

I have an OpenVPN server running. You need to download a client. I will give you one. There are clients available for the following platforms:

  • Windows (32 and 64 bits),
  • MacOS
  • Linux
  • Android
  • IOS (iPhone, iPad and iPhone).

What other options does VPN provide?

  • If you live in a country where some sites are blocked, you can access them all!
  • It also works the other way around. The UK for example has BBC iViewer which can only be accessed inside the UK.
How much does it cost?

I offer 3 plans, based on the number of machines you want to connect;

  1. Budget – This is limited to one single machine and you pay USD 1.95 per month.
  2. Small – You can connect up to 3 devices; 5 US $ per month.
  3. Unlimited – Unlimited users; 20 $
